Oral health is very important during every stage of life. At Snoqualmie Ridge Family Dental , we work extra hard to provide positive and engaging dental visits for our young patients. We love kids dentistry (“pedodontics”). We are committed to helping your child prepare for a lifetime of great smiles.

The American Academy of Pediatric Association (“AAPD” – one of the most important professional organizations for pedodontics/kids dentistry) recommends a dental visit when the first tooth comes in, usually between 6 and 12 months of age – “first visit by first birthday”. This visit will establish a dental home for your child. The most important reason for early dental visits is to set up a thorough prevention program and establish good oral hygiene practices.

Dental plaque builds up on teeth and causes gum irritation and tooth decay. Teeth cleaning and hygiene instructions improve brushing and flossing, leading to cleaner teeth and healthier gums.

AAPD recommends a dental check-up at least twice a year for most children. Some children may need more frequent dental visits because of increased risk of cavities, atypical growth patterns or poor oral hygiene.

Dental visits also provide ongoing assessment of changes in your child’s oral health. For example, your children may need additional fluoride, dietary changes or sealants for ideal dental health, or orthodontic treatment to guide the teeth as they emerge in the mouth.

Teething: From six months to age 3, your child may have sore gums when teeth are erupting. Many children like a clean teething ring, cool spoon or cold wet washcloth.

Brushing for children: You should start cleaning your child’s gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water before the eruption of a baby tooth. As soon as teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste and a soft toothbrush that is appropriately sized for the age. For a child less than 2 years of age, use a “smear” or “rice-size” (one grain) of toothpaste. For 2-5 year old, use a “pea-size” amount of toothpaste and assist your child’s toothbrushing. This is because young children do not have the dexterity or ability to brush their teeth effectively.

Prevalence of Caries in Children: Early Childhood Caries (“ECC”, also known as baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries) is very common. In fact, tooth decay is one of the most widespread chronic childhood diseases in the U.S. More than 40% of kindergarten-age children have tooth decay, making it more common than asthma or hay fever. Pain associated with tooth decay is the number one cause for missed time from school.

Bottle Feeding: Children should be weaned from the bottle at 12-14 months of age.

Thumb and finger sucking: Thumb sucking is normal for infants, and many stop by age 2. If the habit continues beyond age 3, an evaluation is recommended. Prolonged thumb sucking can create bite problems, open bite, or malalignment of teeth.
